Elizabeth Laird Tru of Demopolis, Alabama, was born in 1867 to a prominent family with deep roots in Marengo County’s history. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Laird) Tru. She attended the University of Alabama and upon graduating, dedicated her life to serving her community. She was a member of the Demopolis Women’s Club, along with other organizations, and she was an active member of the Marengo County Historical Society.

Elizabeth was a passionate historian and worked her entire life to preserve the history of Marengo County. She wrote several books and articles on the county’s history, including “Marengo County History” and “A History of Demopolis.” She was also a contributing writer for several local newspapers, including the Demopolis Times and the Marengo County Tribune.

Elizabeth was also involved in a number of civic organizations, such as the Demopolis City Council and the Marengo County Board of Education. She helped to found the Demopolis Public Library and served as its first president. She also was a leader in the movement to preserve the historic buildings in the county.

Elizabeth was a beloved figure in her community and was honored with the naming of the Elizabeth Laird Tru Memorial Library in her hometown of Demopolis. She passed away in 1993, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the history of her beloved Marengo County.
