On the walls of the portico surrounding the courtyard are paintings of each of the 21 missions founded by the Franciscan Order between 1769 and 1833.  

They were placed about 30 miles apart (the distance of a days journey then) between San Diego and Sonoma; the total distance is about 650 miles.

The Santa Paula Historical Society (SPHS) is a nonprofit organization based in Santa Paula, California. Founded in 1967, the SPHS is dedicated to the preservation and appreciation of the rich history of the Santa Clara Valley. The society owns and operates the Santa Paula Oil Museum and the Santa Paula Historical Society Library.

The Oil Museum is a unique and interactive facility that celebrates the history of the Santa Clara Valley’s oil industry. Visitors learn about the history of the region’s petroleum industry and its impact on the area’s economy and culture. Exhibits include artifacts, photographs, and displays on the early days of oil production, the development of the oil industry, and the people who contributed to its success.

The Santa Paula Historical Society Library is a research center that houses a collection of books, documents, photographs, and artifacts related to Santa Paula’s history. The library also contains a variety of archival materials, such as maps, census records, and city directories. In addition, the library offers access to digital resources, including an online catalog and digital collections.

The SPHS also hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including lectures, educational programs, and field trips. The society also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, such as leading tours or assisting with archival projects. By preserving and promoting the history of the Santa Clara Valley, the SPHS helps to ensure that its unique cultural heritage will be remembered for generations to come.
