The Castroville Historical Society was established in 1975 to foster an appreciation of the history of the area, to preserve its unique heritage, and to disseminate knowledge about its past. The Society is located in the historic downtown area of Castroville, California, a small town nestled in the Salinas Valley in Monterey County.

The Society operates the museum, library and archives, which contain a variety of local and family histories, photos, documents, artifacts, and memorabilia. The Society also offers guided tours of the local area, which include stops at the Castroville Adobe, the Elkhorn Slough, and other sites of historical interest.

The Society organizes educational lectures, workshops, special events and field trips throughout the year. It also hosts an annual Castroville Pioneer Day celebration, which features activities such as a parade, a quilt show, a farmers' market, and live music.

The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter, operates a gift shop, and maintains an online presence through its website and social media accounts. The Society strives to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of the Castroville area and its people.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.

Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).

PG Point Pinos / Subaru deer?? (# 0054) Given all of the ads with Subarus driven by dogs, maybe he commutes to golf in the nearby Subaru….

Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture.

When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment - returning (# 0024) Life after the war, returning to no home and with no resources, to hostile environments that were slow to accommodate their former neighbors. Per information on a related <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">site</a></u>, due to hostility there was no reestablishment of the Japanese community of Castroville, though some went to work in the canneries in nearby Monterey.
