The Pacific Grove Heritage Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the city of Pacific Grove’s rich historical heritage. Established in 1986, the society is composed of a group of local citizens, business owners, and historians who are committed to preserving Pacific Grove’s unique history, architecture, and culture. The society operates a museum, library, and research center where visitors can learn about Pacific Grove’s past. The museum displays artifacts, photographs, and documents about the city’s people and places, and its library contains an extensive collection of books and other resources related to the city’s history.

The Pacific Grove Heritage Society also sponsors a variety of programs and events throughout the year, including lectures, tours, and workshops. Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.
Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).
Salinas / Oldenburg sculpture (# 0070) A mediocre shot because it wasn’t the reason I was visiting the park, but in the background (and partially hidden) is “Hat in Three Stages of Landing” by Claes Oldenburg. Pulling together various sources that I ran across, the Oldenburg hats ended up in Salinas at this location mainly because of a national effort to fund art for smaller cities in the 1970s, and Oldenburg had an interest in creating art for the people. The park is next to the Salinas Rodeo ground and the hat motif was chosen to represent the stages of a hat coming to landing when thrown from a horse by a rodeo cowboy. The Oldenburg work was installed in 1978, deteriorated somewhat around 2000 and then was refurbished in 2013. To honor that Salinas is called “Salad Bowl of the World” for all of lettuce grown there, the hats are perforated. The Roadside America link below has more detail. Monterey / Cannery Row – native recognition (# 0066) Though I doubt it’s ever read by the passing tourists, I was glad to see a marker documenting that for a very long period prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early 1600’s, there were natives who utilized the plentiful fish, seals, and other animals and plants available in the area for food, shelter, and improvised boats.
Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf distressed seal? (# 0060) When I walked out on the wharf there were a small number of people watching this seal. When I came back 20 minutes later, this seal was roughly in the same spot, acting weird. It would wander closer to the water and then back up, and was bobbing its head up and down, and did this for a couple of minutes. I looked around the wharf to see it there was someone there in some sort of uniform to report it, but of course one can never find an ‘official’ when one wants to.

PG Point Pinos / golf deer (# 0051) Deer, grazing, at the Pacific Grove (PG) Municipal golf course which overlooks Point Pinos. As I said in a post of a couple of month’s back, I was surprised that all of the people watching stood back, and the drivers going by all slowed down appropriately.
