The Flanders Foundation, located in Carmel, California, is an award-winning, non-profit organization that promotes the preservation, conservation and interpretation of the unique cultural heritage of the Monterey Peninsula. Established in 1960, the Foundation works to promote public awareness of the region's history, and to promote the public appreciation of the area's natural beauty and cultural heritage through education, research and public programs.

The Foundation offers a wide range of educational and research programs, including walking tours, lectures, workshops, summer camps, and youth programs. The Foundation also works with local organizations, businesses and government agencies to create and implement projects that enhance the community and its environment.

The Flanders Foundation also provides grants and other financial support to local organizations and individuals to further promote the preservation, conservation and interpretation of the area's unique history and cultural heritage. The Foundation also works to conserve, protect and restore the region's valuable natural resources, including the Carmel River and its watershed.

The Foundation's commitment to the preservation and conservation of the area's unique heritage and environment has earned it numerous awards and recognitions, including the California Preservation Foundation's Outstanding Achievement Award and the Monterey County Historical Society's Preservation Award. The Foundation is also a member of the American Association for State and Local History and the California Historical Society.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.

Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).

Monterey / Cannery Row – native recognition (# 0066) Though I doubt it’s ever read by the passing tourists, I was glad to see a marker documenting that for a very long period prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early 1600’s, there were natives who utilized the plentiful fish, seals, and other animals and plants available in the area for food, shelter, and improvised boats.

Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf distressed seal? (# 0060) When I walked out on the wharf there were a small number of people watching this seal. When I came back 20 minutes later, this seal was roughly in the same spot, acting weird. It would wander closer to the water and then back up, and was bobbing its head up and down, and did this for a couple of minutes. I looked around the wharf to see it there was someone there in some sort of uniform to report it, but of course one can never find an ‘official’ when one wants to.

Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf ?amiss? (# 0057) Something’s amiss here! What’s a real commercial fishing boat doing so close to Fisherman’s Wharf, a site for tourist and sports fishing boats?

Pacific Grove / wave break (# 0043) FYI, the group clambering over the rocks is five women.

Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture.

When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).

The two buildings on the left are at the Stanford <u><a href="https://hopkinsmarinestation.stanford.edu" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Hopkins Marine Station</a></u>; the building on the right side of the picture is just a nearby house.

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment – desert prison (# 0020) Description of life at the internment camp in Poston, AZ, where the Castroville Japanese were sent from the Salianas Rodeo Grounds detention center. Life for the next three years was in the long rows of barracks pictured here, in a desolate and remote spot not far from the Colorado River.

The local tribes in Arizona are working through the <u><a href="https://www.postonpreservation.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Poston Community Alliance</a></u> to honor the history of the Japanese and their work with the tribes during their internment.
