Hanging Rock Ponds The Hanging Rock Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System winds around what was previously a strip mine. The Collis P Huntington Railroad Historical Society Inc is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of railroads in the Huntington, West Virginia area. The society was founded in 1972 and is named after Collis P. Huntington, a prominent figure in the development of railroads in the United States.

The society operates out of a museum in Huntington, which houses a collection of railroad artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the Norfolk and Western Railway, and other local railroads. The museum is open to the public and offers guided tours, educational programs, and special events throughout the year.

In addition to the museum, the society also owns and operates a restored Chesapeake and Ohio steam locomotive, which is used for special excursions and events. The locomotive is a popular attraction for visitors to the museum and for rail enthusiasts in the area.

Rock House Trail The Rock House Trail is one of the many trail options in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. The out-and-back trail is 0.75 miles long and leads to a large rock overhang. This trail is a great option for those wanting a short, easy experience with fantastic views. Benches are available every few hundred feet, and interpretive signs can be found along the way. The final stretch features a wooden boardwalk that leads to a small deck complete with benches underneath the rock overhang. The main feature of this trail is the large rock overhang. These types of geologic features are commonly called “rock houses” or “rock shelters.” This rock house is made of sandstone formed during the Pennsylvanian Period sometime between 318 million and 299 million years ago. The rock house itself was created more recently when water eroded the upper and lower portions of the sandstone at different rates. The lower portions of the sandstone are softer and could be eroded faster than the harder sections near the top. Rock houses have been important to and loved by people for thousands of years. American Indians used these geologic features for shelter, ceremonies, and more. In the 1800s, southeast Ohioans would use such rock houses for shelter, ceremonies, labor union meetings, and beyond. Some outlaws even infamously used rock houses as secret outposts to hide stolen goods or themselves from the law. Today, many people visit rock houses for their beauty and awe-inspiring grandeur. Backpacking at Lake Vesuvius The Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area has several trails, offering visitors short options to long, multi-day excursions. Backpacking is popular at Lake Vesuvius. There is a 17 mile long backpacking trail, as well as an 8 mile long Lakeshore Trail. These trails intersect at several places, offering visitors several routes and loop options.
