The Catheys Valley Historical Society (CVHS) is a nonprofit organization located in Merced, California. It was established in 1981 to preserve and promote the history of Catheys Valley and the surrounding area. The CVHS is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of the Catheys Valley area through a variety of educational and public programs, as well as through its museum, archives, and library.

The CVHS museum is located in the former Catheys Valley Grammar School and includes a variety of artifacts, photographs, and documents such as a 1870 school bell, a hand-built stone fireplace, Native American artifacts, and a variety of local farm and ranch equipment. Also on site is a small library and archives, which contain books, manuscripts, and other resources related to the history of Catheys Valley and the surrounding area.

The CVHS also offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year, such as educational programs in local schools and special events at the museum. The CVHS also hosts and participates in a variety of community events throughout the year, such as the annual Catheys Valley Pioneer Day celebration and the annual Catheys Valley 4th of July Parade.

The CVHS is committed to preserving, promoting, and sharing the history of Catheys Valley and the surrounding area. Through its museum, archives, library, and educational programs, the CVHS is dedicated to providing the public with a better understanding and appreciation of the history of the region.

Merced County Courthouse (# 2544) Opened in 1875 and was in use as county courthouse until 1975! Merced / Bank of Italy building (# 2537) Built in 1928 as the Bank of Italy building, seemingly fairly ornate for downtown Merced. It’s been through many name changes including the early change from Bank of Italy to Bank of America, and then most recently to Merced County Office of Education.

Merced / El Capitan hotel (# 2529) One of my reasons for exploring through Merced was some recent stories about the reopening of an historic hotel in downtown Merced – the El Capitan. Per the Merced County Times story, the hotel was constructed in 1911, suffered a major fire in 1931, a remodeling in 1936, and then a very major remodeling in 2018. The hotel is now part of a chain in the Hyatt system designed for boutique hotels. As this and other pictures suggest, downtown Merced was very orderly and attractive. Merced / The Tioga (# 2542) An impressive art deco building, the Hotel Tioga was built in 1928. Before and after the war (WWII), it was the place for prominent politicians and entertainers to stay, though it started to decline in the 1980’s. It’s interior has since been remodeled into 70 apartments aimed at professionals and students at nearby UC Merced.
