Tacoma Narrows Bridges, Washington State Route 16, West End, Tacoma, WA Built in 1948-1950 and 2002-2007, this pair of suspension bridges carry Washington State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows of Puget Sound between the city of Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. The bridges are approximately 5,400 feet (1,646 meters) long, with the longest span of each bridge being approximately 2,800 feet (853 meters) long, suspended with cables between the towers of each bridge. The bridges are the second and third, respectively, to span the narrows, with the original bridge, designed by Leon Moisseiff built in 1940, featuring a sleek and visually beautiful appearance, but collapsed due to poor structural design only four months after its completion, with the rest of the bridge being removed by the summer of 1943. Following the collapse of the bridge, the construction of the older of the two present spans was delayed by material shortages during World War II, before construction finally began in 1948. The older bridge, designed by a committee of engineers appointed by the Washington Toll Bridge Authority, is painted green with a thick stiffening truss structure under the deck, making it far more rigid and stable, but much less sleek than its predecessor, and carries four lanes of traffic. Traffic volumes increased during the subsequent half-century after the bridge’s opening in 1950, and a second span was constructed beginning in 2002. The newer span, designed by Bechtel Corporation and built by Kiewit Pacific Corporation, features gray concrete towers and green cables, carries four lanes, and features decorative motifs on the towers that are reminiscent of its older companion.

Restoring wetlands near Fife, WA Restoring Hylebos Creek near Fife, WA required more than just realigning and rebuilding the creek. Crews also have to plant more than 400,000 shrubs and trees. In the spring of 2024, they placed nearly 80,000 new plants on the banks of the creek between SR 509 and 12th Avenue East. The restoration work is part of the WSDOT's Puget Sound Gateway Program to complete SR 167 between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. The new SR 167 expressway will border an area that was a wetland area decades ago. Over the years, thanks to development and rezoning, many areas were used for agriculture and industry. That resulted in deterioration of the creek and the wetlands. The expressway project not only finishes SR 167, but turns more than 150 acres of land back into wetlands, as it was meant to be.

Rebuilding and restoring a wetland near Fife, WA The SR 167 Completion Project includes a unique program to restore more than 150 acres of wetlands on both sides of I-5 near Fife. The restoration work includes realigning Hylebos Creek and putting in about 800,000 native plants and trees. Decades ago, Hylebos Creek was rerouted into what was essentially an irrigation ditch so that the surrounding wetlands could serve agricultural and industrial needs. This resulted in a slow decline in the fish and wildlife population. It also led to chronic flooding on I-5 because the natural reservoir areas that absorbed extra water from heavy rainstorms no longer existed. Crews are turning it back into wetlands. In summer 2023, our crews excavated and realigned Hylebos Creek west of SR 99. In the winter and spring of 2024, they started adding plants to the area. This section west of SR 99 will have roughly 80,000 new trees, shrubs and other vegetation in a carefully laid out grid pattern. This will add diversity to the ecosystem to encourage the return of more wildlife. The SR 167 Completion project is part of WSDOT’s Puget Sound Gateway Program which completes critical links in Washington’s highway and freight network. It will build an important new connection to the Port of Tacoma, improve the movement of freight and reduce congestion on local roads and highways.
