The Monterey Dunes Natural History Association (MDNHA) is a non-profit organization based in Marina, California. It was founded in 1981 to promote the understanding and appreciation of the unique natural history of Monterey County, California. MDNHA’s mission is to educate, protect, and restore the diverse habitats of the Monterey Peninsula.

MDNHA is involved in a variety of projects and activities that conserve the natural environment of the area. These include habitat restoration, public education, and scientific field research. The organization also works to preserve the cultural and historical resources of the region.

MDNHA has a wide range of educational programs for schoolchildren and adults, including lectures, hikes, and visits to local parks. It also offers field trips to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and other local attractions. In addition, MDNHA hosts volunteer events such as beach clean-ups and tree plantings.

MDNHA is a member of the California Native Plant Society and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It is supported by donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, as well as grants from state and federal agencies. The organization has a board of directors, a staff of seven, and a network of volunteers.

The Monterey Dunes Natural History Association is dedicated to promoting the conservation of the natural environment of Monterey County. Through education, research, and public outreach, MDNHA works to ensure that the unique habitats of the area are preserved for future generations.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.

Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).

Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture.

When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment cycle (# 0028) A fascinating, and very under-utilized, historical site in Castroville, which is on the way to Monterey, CA. I fortunately discovered it, and a number of other places related to Japanese and Chinese history in California, just by searching through <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">The Historical Marker Database</a></u>.

Japanese laborers had been migrating to this area since the late 1800’s as tenant farmers (the primary crop remains artichokes). By the 1930’s there were enough Japanese families that they wanted a schoolhouse to preserve history and also to provide a community for their children that was safe from the local hostility. The “Japanese Schoolhouse,” founded in 1936, was short-lived since in 1942 all Japanese were ordered to be interred, due to the war with Japan.

Historical Marker <u>”<a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">For the Sake of the Children</a>”</u> provides a good description of the history of the area.
