The Juan de Fuca Highway was developed in the late 19th century as a series of trails throughout the forest connecting logging and fishing communities. Economic transportation was accomplished by water and private timber company railroads. Travel along the dirt trails was primarily for community interaction such as baseball games, dancing, education and missionary endeavors. Over time the trails evolved from a walking path into a road for wagons, automobiles, and school buses. Different segments had different names like the Clallam Road, the Pysht River Wagon Road, and the New Road (from Pysht to Deep Creek). Before highways, logging roads, and logging trucks, timber was brought out of the woods on trains. Locomotives would haul the timber trains out of the woods to the Sekiu log deck, shown in the picture above, and unload them into the bay. The logs were lashed together into rafts then towed to sawmills to be cut into lumber. In the early 1930's local logging camps competed with each other for the highest one day harvest total. A Merrill &amp; Ring crew out of Pysht was the eventual winner, cutting, hauling and loading ovre 100 railroad cars in one 8-hour shift.&quot;
