Porterville Museum is located in Porterville, California, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. It was founded in 1953 and is the oldest museum in the county. The museum is filled with artifacts from the area’s rich history, including a collection of Native American baskets, pioneer clothing, and a range of items from the early settlers who came to the area. The museum also houses a large collection of photographs, books, and documents about the history of Porterville.

The museum also has an outdoor area with a variety of displays, including a replica of a settler’s log cabin, a blacksmith’s shop, and a variety of vintage farm equipment. In addition, the museum has a garden with a variety of native plants and trees that were used by the early settlers. On certain occasions, the museum also hosts a variety of special events, including lectures, workshops, and demonstrations.

The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday and features a variety of educational programs and activities for both children and adults. Admission is free, and the museum also offers a variety of gift items for purchase. Tulare / historic downtown (# 2444) Tulare is a town of 69,000 in Tulare County and is only 8 miles south of the much larger city (141,000 pop.) of Visalia. The economy of the area is primarily agricultural. The historic downtown section of Tulare was pleasant, with tree lined streets and well-preserved historic buildings such as this one. Unfortunately the only thing I could find about the building was a real estate site listing it as built in 1907.
Tulare / Linder & Harlow mural (# 2435) Though not a great picture due to shade, I found this mural of the local Linder & Harlow Carriage and Wagon Repository to be fascinating, since I’ve never seen anything about the sorts of facilities that would have been built for carriages. The mural was painted by a local in 1998 and one of the men on it is Reynold Linder who immigrated from German to Tulare in 1888. The mural is on the Linder building, though I’m almost certain this Linder building is not the same as the original Repository. Tulare / historic Elks Building downtown (# 2445) Another very well-preserved building in historic downtown Tulare. Again I could not find any information n the building, but a real estate site does list it as built in 1925.
