The CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC ART (CPA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art of photography in Carmel, California. Founded in 1967, CPA has become a leading institution for photographic exhibitions, education, and community outreach.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.

Salinas / Japanese WWII detention center (# 0073) The reason I was visiting the park, a memorial commemorating the WWII Japanese Detention Center that was on the Salinas Rodeo grounds, which are visible in the background. It was to these grounds that Japanese of Monterey County, including the residents of the Castroville area noted earlier in these pictures, were detained prior to being sent to Poston for the remainder of the war. Below is the text on the monument, thanks to the <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=165487" rel="noreferrer nofollow">HMDB listing</a></u>. <i>This monument is dedicated to the 3,586 Monterey Bay Area residents of Japanese ancestry, most of whom were American citizens, temporarily confined in the Salinas Rodeo Grounds during World War II from April to July 1942. They were detained without charges, trial, or establishment of guilt before being incarcerated in permanent camps, mostly at Poston, Arizona. May such injustice and humiliation never recur. </i> Next to the monument, inside the black fence, is the “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” (see adjacent picture)
Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).
Monterey / Cannery Row – Fishermen’s mural (# 0061) This particular section of Cannery Row is called <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=55191" rel="noreferrer nofollow">McAbee Beach</a></u> in honor of a failure by John McAbee, who purchased the beach around 1900 and planned (but failed) to create a small tourist attraction here of cottages and rental boats. There is no explanation for the simple mural of fishermen, but a nearby placard notes that Portugese whalers used this beach in the mid-1800s for catching whales to extract the oil for lamps, until that failed due to the discovery of kerosene in the late 1800’s. And then, after McAbee’s efforts failed, the beach became the home for a Chinese fishing village that led to the sardine industry. So, there is a long history fishing being launched from this beach. ******* Note that there appears to be either a seal or an otter a little past the break water. It appears to be floating on its back, so probably an otter.
Monterey / Cannery Row – native recognition (# 0066) Though I doubt it’s ever read by the passing tourists, I was glad to see a marker documenting that for a very long period prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early 1600’s, there were natives who utilized the plentiful fish, seals, and other animals and plants available in the area for food, shelter, and improvised boats.
