After autumn foliage disappears and trees are bare in the woods, the American Beech lightens the views with its pale brown leaves, which remain all winter long. The leaves in spring eventually replace the brown. The phenomenon fascinates me, yet I've not been able to photograph these forest scenes with clarity that pleases me. Of over 50 shots taken in various locations, these at Buffalo Springs Archaeological District are the best. The Halifax County Historical Society in South Boston, VA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the county's rich heritage. [An album of 5 photos] Nothing is known about this structure, which has a fine tree in its overgrown front yard. I'd guess it dates from the last quarter of 19th century (possibly). It appears to be the typical vernacular rural I-style house with rear additions. The wood house is 2-stories and shows (in the view that shows the side of the building) much disrepair to the metal roof. Two relatively unadorned interior chimneys are centrally located, one on each side of the parapet on the front façade. One chimney has a teasing lean to it. The other provides bracing for the antenna. The porch appears to have boards ripped up on the left side. Circular wooden posts provide dubious support for the porch roof, which combines leaning with sagging. The post on the far left is split near the base. Towards the rear of the house, it seems as if the side is close to collapse. Windows are in terrible shape but seems to far better on the front façade, except for the shutters. A rich growth of vines festoons the cornice at the roof. The steps to the porch are blocked by shrubbery and undergrowth. The door is partially open (I did not trespass or go inside). The sidelights consist of 2 vertical panes on each side of the door. The transom has two segments. At least two separate sheds with metal roofs on the right side of the structure. One shows boards coming done.
