LEE HALL TRAIN STATION FOUNDATION
NEWPORT NEWS, VA
Lee Hall Train Station Foundation in Newport News, Virginia is a historic train station located in the Lee Hall Village, a historic district of Newport News. Built in 1881 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the station served as the rail line’s main passenger stop for over a century. The station was closed in 1971 and the building fell into disrepair until the mid-1990s when the Lee Hall Train Station Foundation was formed. The station is a two-story, classic red brick building, with a hip roof and ornate cupola. Inside, the station features a ticket office, waiting area and restrooms. The exterior of the station has been completely restored and painted in the original colors of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The building also features a large clock tower and the original train platform, which is still in use today.
The Foundation has also undertaken many other projects to restore the station and its surrounding grounds. This includes the restoration of the passenger platform and the installation of new track and signal lights, as well as the addition of a restored caboose, which sits on the platform. The Foundation also hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the annual Lee Hall Train Festival, which celebrates the station’s history with food, music and entertainment.
