Stream restoration in Washington, D.C. A recently restored stretch of Milkhouse Ford, a tributary of Rock Creek, flows through Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., on May 1, 2012. Over time, increasingly powerful and high-volume stormwater flows had scoured the streambanks of Milkhouse Ford, undercutting surrounding trees and other vegetation, and exposing utility lines, including sanitary sewer pipes. The project, a partnership between the National Park Service and the District Department of the Environment, now the Department of Energy & Environment, involving a technique known as a regenerative stormwater conveyance, took about three months to complete in the fall of 2011 and cost about $700,000.
