from the past Old motel sign at Kiptopeke State Park. The ferry to Virginia Beach used to run from Kiptopeke, but stopped running when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was built. This motel (Tourinns Motor Court) lasted until 1992, when the state park was built. I love the "Free TV" part!

tiny toad I don't know what kind of toad this is, but there were many of them on the trail. It is about the size of my thumbnail. Savage Neck Dunes State Natural Area Preserve, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, is well worth a visit! It has a variety of habitats, from woodlands to beach.

busy tree There was a tree in the visitor center parking lot at Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR that was attracting everything flying and crawling. There was a hole in the bark, so I assume they were dining on sap. Visitors include tawny emperors, Nessux sphinx, European hornet, eastern comma, question mark, and red admirals.
