After autumn foliage disappears and trees are bare in the woods, the American Beech lightens the views with its pale brown leaves, which remain all winter long. The leaves in spring eventually replace the brown. The phenomenon fascinates me, yet I've not been able to photograph these forest scenes with clarity that pleases me. Of over 50 shots taken in various locations, these at Buffalo Springs Archaeological District are the best. Buffalo Springs is in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, a few miles west of Clarksville.
