The Nansemond County Training School Heritage Center is located in Suffolk, Virginia, on the site of the former Nansemond County Training School. The school was constructed in 1924 as a segregated school for African American students and served as a crucial center of education for the Nansemond County community until its closure in 1969.
In 2012, the Nansemond County Training School Alumni Association transformed the historic building into a Heritage Center, dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the school and its impact on the community. [A series of 5 photos] The structure no longer exists, having been demolished sometime after 2019, when it's listed as part of the Courtland Historic District on the National Register. This wooden 2-story commercial building dates from circa 1880 and was in Courtland, Southampton County, Virginia.
The gable roof, pedimented on the front facade, has a diamond shaped vent, possibly louvered; a similar vent is on the rear. Brackets are in the cornice. Three asymmetrically placed windows are on the second level, each with an interesting lintel of 6 sections diminishing in size as it approaches the window, as in a corbelling pattern. The wood here is also in a herring-bone pattern. There are 2 recessed entrances to the building. each with double wood doors with a vertical pane of glass in each; two large panes are in the transom above each entry. The display windows are larger on the right are generally larger than those on the left. As the windows face the recessed entrance, they are not as large. The foundation is brick with pigeon hole acute angle corners as it enters into the recess. The side facades contain 3 windows. The rear has a pair of windows in the gable and a set ot 2 large wooden doors. Also at the rear is a sort of porch with shed roof supported by round metal posts.
I wonder if the building may have had 2 phases of construction; there's a clear division indicated by a vertical wooden band on the 2nd story. In addition, the window layout at street level on the left is definitely different from the right. For years I've been trying to find out when the recessed entry began appearing on stores. This circa 1880 structure is one of the earliest I've seen. I lived in Courtland from 1974 to 1986 and barely noticed this building
