The Windham County Historical Society (WCHS) is a nonprofit organization located in Newfane, Vermont. Founded in 1953, it is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Windham County’s unique cultural and historic heritage. To do this, the WCHS collects, preserves, and interprets historical artifacts, documents, photographs, and other materials that tell the story of Windham County’s past.

The Society is housed in the Old Newfane Town Hall, a National Historic Landmark building that was built in 1823 and is itself a part of Windham County’s history. The building contains a museum, library, and archives, as well as a research center with access to digital and print collections. The museum contains a variety of artifacts, including furniture, tools, clothing, and other items that were used in the area during the 19th and 20th centuries. The library includes a variety of books and periodicals on the history of Windham County and the surrounding area, while the archives contain original documents, maps, and photographs.

The Society also sponsors a variety of educational programs, such as lectures and workshops, as well as a summer tour and other events. Additionally, the Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, Windham Historian, which features articles about Windham County’s history and events. Through its work, the Windham County Historical Society plays an important role in preserving the history of Windham County and educating the public about its past.

'Show-&-Tell' Cages on Distant Hill Nature Trail There are wood frog and spotted salamander egg masses in containers at the edge of one of the Distant Hill Nature Trail's vernal pools for visitors to examine up close. Come and check them out!
