The Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society of Shelby County in Timpson, Texas was founded in 1976 and is dedicated to preserving the history of the area and its people. The Society collects and preserves genealogical and historical records, photographs, and artifacts from the area and its citizens. It also produces a quarterly newsletter, The Timpson Times, for members and publishes books, journals, and other materials related to the area.

The Society maintains a research library of genealogical and historical materials, including books, periodicals, microfilm, photographs, maps, and other documents. The library is open to the public and provides access to records from the Shelby County Clerk's office, the Timpson Public Library, and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Footprints in the Sand - Carthage, TX Footprints in the Sand is a famous Christian Poem from the 1930s which describes the way Jesus picks up the narrator to help with his struggles in life. Sculptor Bob Harness read the poem in 2008 and wanted to turn it into a sculpture. After some fundraisers and local volunteer work, the memorial park opened August 19, 2014. The old man carried by Jesus is Willie George who donated money at the start of the project. The Bronze statue of Jesus is 14 feet tall atop a five foot pedestal. The path from the parking lot starts with two sets of footprints half of the way, with one set after Jesus carries the man.

Tex Ritter Statue - Carthage, TX Carthage, TX is the home of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. The most prominent musician from the museum is the "Singing Cowboy" Tex Ritter who lived in Carthage. This statue of Ritter and his horse was sculpted by Bob Harness and is outside the museum. I was inspired to post this photo today because of the Ken Burns Country Music Documentary. On a personal note, I lived in Carthage when I was a toddler while my dad taught at Panola County Junior College for a couple of years. I hadn't been back to Carthage in over 35 years, when I had an opportunity to pass through town this summer. My wife and I drove from Nashville with minimal stops for 10 hours so we could find my old house before sunset. There was enough ambient light left for me to see one thing, and I chose this statue. Ironically, my parents never told me Ritter was from Carthage, and instead would mention Jim Reeves. Unfortunately, his monument was too far out of town for us to get to.
