Montvale Cemetery Montvale Cemetery, located just outside of Sterling City in Sterling County. Per the Texas Historical Commission: "The community of Montvale was established in 1884 when the pioneer settlement of St. Elmo was relocated here. Then a part of Tom Green County, Montvale was located on the Shafter Military Trail, an early road from Fort Concho. The Sterling County Historical Society Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Sterling City and Sterling County, Texas. Established in the early 1950s, the organization collects and preserves photographs, documents, artifacts, and other historical materials that tell the stories of the area’s past. In addition, the organization provides educational programs, exhibits, and tours to the public, as well as annual events such as the Sterling County Heritage Festival.

The organization is headquartered in the historic Sterling County Courthouse in downtown Sterling City. The building houses a museum, library, and a research center which are all open to the public. The museum contains artifacts from the area’s past, including artifacts from Native American tribes that lived in the area, early settlers, and industries that have contributed to the growth of Sterling City and Sterling County. The library contains books, documents, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to the history of the area.

The research center is available to members of the organization, as well as the public, and is open during regular business hours. The center provides access to a wide range of resources, such as historic maps, photographs, and indexes of historical records. The organization also offers educational programs, such as lectures and seminars, to help educate the public about the area’s history.

The Sterling County Historical Society Inc. is an important part of the history of Sterling City and Sterling County. Through their efforts, they are preserving the history of the area and providing educational opportunities for citizens and visitors alike.

Montvale Cemetery After a bit of research, I believe this leggy man is Orthoporus ornatus, the desert millipede. I took these pictures from about 5 to 6 PM. As the sun sank, these fellows started coming out in droves. They ranged from six to eight inches long. I wish I could have taken a better picture to show the sheer number of them! Despite their enormous size, they are completely harmless--in fact, they are beneficial. They consume dead plants and aerate the soil. Old Concho, San Saba and Llano Valley Railroad Station (Sterling City, Texas) Historical Marker for the Concho, San Saba & Llano Valley Railroad Station in Sterling City, Texas. The plaque reads: "Attracted by the area's livestock production, nearby shipping points, and the financial support of the town, the Concho, San Saba and Llano Valley Railroad began building a line to Sterling City in 1909. A boxcar served as the depot until this mission revival building was completed. Highway and pipeline construction caused a decline in rail traffic and the line closed in 1958. Only the depot remains as a reminder of the early rail service that helped develop the area. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark – 1980"
Old Concho, San Saba and Llano Valley Railroad Station (Sterling City, Texas) Old 1911 Concho, San Saba & Llano Valley Railroad Station (CSS&LV) in Sterling City, Texas. The CSS&LV was leased to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway (GC&SF) in 1914. The CSS&LV was merged into the GC&SF in 1948. The Mission Revival style depot was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1980 (as the Concho, San Saba and Llano Valley Railroad Station). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 (NRHP No. 100005690 as the Sterling City Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway Passenger Depot).
Old State Hotel and First State Bank Building (Sterling City, Texas) Historical Marker for the old State Hotel and First State Bank Building in Sterling City, Texas. The plaque reads: "Directors of the First State Bank of Sterling City, the town's earliest financial institution, had this two-story brick commercial building constructed in 1910. It originally housed the State Hotel and the banking operation, which was acquired in 1926 by the First National Bank. Other offices that have been located here include those of doctors, the telephone company, post office and city hall. E. B. Butler also operated a drugstore here from 1926 to the 1960s. Businessmen associated with the site have included many of the prominent early leaders of the community."
