Milam County Courthouse (Cameron, Texas) Historic Milam County Courthouse in Cameron, Texas. The Romanesque Revival style court house was constructed 1891-92. In the 1930s, a New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA) project made interior changes and removed the original roof, cupola, clock and justice statue. A statue of county namesake Benjamin Milam was erected on the courthouse grounds in 1938 to commemorate the centennial of Texas independence. A Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program restoration project restored the interior and replace the clock tower and goddess of justice statue.

The Milam County Courthouse and the nearby 1895 county jail were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 (NRHP No. 77001460 as the Milam County Courthouse and Jail). The courthouse and jail were also designated as a State Antiquities Landmark in 1981. The courthouse was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2008.

Milam County Courthouse - This is the fourth structure to serve as the Milam County Courthouse. The local Masonic Lodge laid the cornerstone for the building on July 4, 1891. Designed by architect A. O. Watson of Austin, the courthouse at one time featured a Second Empire style roof and a cupola with a four-sided clock. The clock was removed and the roof altered in a 1938 renovation project by the Federal Works Progress Administration. As the center of county government for over a century, the courthouse stands as a significant part of Milam County history.

Milam County Courthouse - Created in 1835, Milam County's original boundaries extended north and west to include parts of 34 current Texas counties. Government offices were at Nashville-on-the-Brazos and Caldwell before Cameron became county seat in 1846. Two frame buildings and a two-story brick structure served as courthouses in Cameron before the present building was completed.

Austin architects Jacob Larmour and Arthur O. Watson designed this renaissance revival style courthouse, with the cornerstone laid by the local Masonic Lodge on July 4, 1891. The first floor included the county courtroom and offices for county officials, while a district courtroom occupied the second and third stories. Identical north and south facades are five-part compositions, while the east and west are three-bay designs. Each of the four fronts has a projecting center pavilion enhanced by a portico and triangular pediment. A mansard roof and central clock tower top an exterior of arched windows, cut stone pilasters and quarry-faced ashlar limestone with fine detailing.

County commissioners accepted the building as complete in April 1892, although furnishings and the clock tower were finished in succeeding months. In the late 1930s, a Federal renovation project by the Works Progress Administration removed the original roof, cupola, clock and statue, and made interior changes. The State of Texas also dedicated a statue on the grounds to commemorate the centennial of Texas independence and county namesake Ben Milam. Restoration completed in 2002 reopened the full height of the district courtroom and replaced features that had been removed, including a stairway in the center hall and the clock tower and goddess of justice statue.

Cameron City Calaboose (Cameron, Texas) Commemorative sign for the old Cameron City Calaboose in Milam County Texas. The sign reads:

“Calaboose. May 16, 1892 - A bid to build the calaboose was accepted by the Cameron City Council from a company called Westmoreland and Mullinax for $262.50. Calaboose was to be accepted by Major A.J. Lewis and City Marshall R. L. Batte. Mayor Lewis later became Sheriff of Milam County. The Calaboose is twenty feet long, ten feet wide and twelve feet high. Thick wooden walls are formed by the placement of two-by-four-inch timbers flat on top of each other. The floor is of similar construction. The two-by-fours are placed edgewise forming a four-inch wall. There is a door at each end and two windows, one on each side of the building in both cells. The windows have two sets of iron bars - a rounded set of twelve that is built into the facing and a flat set of nine attached on the inside. To keep out the rain and also to help keep prisoners in, wooden shutters were put on the outside. There are iron bars on each shutter which served as a lock.

On July 3, 1956 an ordinance by Councilman Thompson was issued, authorizing the renovation of the calaboose for use by the city in the confinement of prisoners.

The Calaboose was returned to its present sight in 1994 and restored in June 1998.”
