The Yoakum Historical Preservation Society (YHPS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Yoakum, Texas. Founded in 1978 by a group of local citizens, the Society is dedicated to collecting and preserving materials related to the history of Yoakum, its people, and the surrounding area. The Society is a member of the Texas State Historical Association, and is also affiliated with the Texas Historical Commission.

The YHPS works to preserve historical records and artifacts that are important to the history of Yoakum and its people. The Society also works to promote public awareness and understanding of Yoakum’s history through educational activities, such as lectures, tours, and exhibits. YHPS operates the Yoakum Heritage Museum, which serves as a repository for historical artifacts and documents, as well as a venue for educational programs.

The YHPS also provides a number of services to the community, including historic preservation consultation, cemetery restoration, and assistance with creating and maintaining historic markers. The Society works closely with the City of Yoakum, the Yoakum Chamber of Commerce, and other local organizations to promote the preservation and appreciation of Yoakum’s history.

Crews Dispatched to Victoria, TX to assist with Harvey Recovery In August 2017, TPW responded to a request for assistance with Hurricane Harvey recovery from the City of Victoria, Texas, by dispatching a group of signal and sign technicians carrying supplies.

During the eight days Austin crews spent in Victoria they installed more than 120 stop signs and helped restore full operations to more than 90 percent of Victoria’s traffic signals.

Hopkinsville Community A Colony of Freedmen

Members of the Hopkins family came to De Witt County in 1854 as slaves of Judge Henry Clay Pleasants (d. 1899). They worked for a time on a Gonzales County plantation and returned to this area after the Civil War as freedmen. In 1872 Henry Hopkins bought 42 acres of land and established the Hopkinsville community (1 mile west). Residents of the settlement organized the Antioch Baptist Church in 1873 and began a school about ten years later. Although the school closed in 1956, members of the Antioch Baptist Church continue to worship near Hopkinsville.
