The Ripon Historical Society is a nonprofit organization based in Ripon, California. Founded in 1975, it is dedicated to the preservation, education, and celebration of Ripon’s history. The Society collects and preserves artifacts and documents related to the history of Ripon and San Joaquin County, and promotes the city’s historical heritage through educational programs, tours, and other activities.

The Society offers a variety of programs and events, including guided walking tours of historic sites, lectures, and presentations on local history, and an annual Heritage Day celebration. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Ripper, which contains articles and stories about local history, as well as information on upcoming events.

The Society’s museum, located in downtown Ripon, houses a large collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the history of Ripon and San Joaquin County. It also offers a research library and a gift shop.

The Ripon Historical Society is an active member of the Ripon community, and works in partnership with the Ripon Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations to promote the city’s history. It is also a member of the California Historical Society, the American Association of State and Local History, and the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.

Lathrop, CA The sun starts to set on a cool spring evening in Lathrop, CA at the former Southern Pacific Wye on the Fresno Sub.

Tracy / “American Dream” (# 2605) Leaving the Buddhist Temple and the Stockton area, I decided to make a stop in the nearby city of Tracy.

Tracy first came to the attention of many people in the Bay Area in the 1980’s when it started becoming the place for workers in the Bay Area (primarily “Silicon Valley” industries) to move in order to buy the “American Dream,” single-family, suburban home – even though it’s 60 miles from work and the Silicon Valley area.

Given it’s reputation as housing release for Bay Area workers since the1980’s I assumed a town with little history but, as this picture indicates, that’s a bad assumption – it has an historic downtown of tree-lined streets and small shops in buildings dating back to the 1930’s or earlier.

Tracy / 1920 - “Bank of Tracy” (# 2603) “Bank of Tracy” building, completed in 1920 – it’s no longer a bank, having been converted into retail space and offices.

Tracy / 1923 – Grand Theatre (# 2602) The Grand opened in 1923, though the marquee and tower were added in 1939. It closed as a cinema in 1973 and reopened as a performing arts center for the city in 2007.

This was in a shady spot under a tree, so not good detail. Per the <u><a href="https://s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/stockton-2019/images/Files/stockton_cambodian_buddhist_temple_guide.pdf" rel="noreferrer nofollow">guide</a></u> this represent the prince, Siddhartha, leaving his kingdom of privilege and, seeing poor people outside the gate, being dismayed by what he saw, and wanting to leave his current life to study with mystics.
