Old Roma-San Pedro International Bridge (Roma, Texas) Historic 1928 suspension bridge over the Rio Grande between Roma, Texas and Ciudad Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Prior to 1950, Ciudad Miguel Alemán was known as San Pedro de Roma. This suspension bridge is the only remaining of four south Texas international suspension bridges privately constructed in the 1920s. The bridge has been called the Roma Suspension Bridge, the Roma-San Pedro International Bridge, the Roma-Ciudad Miguel Aleman Bridge, the Roma-Miguel Aleman Steel Suspension Bridge and the Roma-Ciudad Miguel Aleman International Suspension Bridge. The old suspension bridge is approximately 700 ft long. The two bridge towers consist of eight vertical steel members that taper as they rise. The bridge was closed in 1979 when a new adjacent bridge was constructed. The suspension bridge was designated as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the Texas Section and Mexico Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2016. The bridge was designated as a State Antiquities Landmark in 1983 (as the Roma Suspension Bridge).
