The Medina Downtown Historical Association (MDHA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Medina, Tennessee. Founded in 2007, MDHA seeks to preserve the town's history and provide educational opportunities to the public. MDHA works to maintain and restore historic buildings, monuments, and other sites in Medina. The organization also sponsors special events and programs to educate the community about the town’s history and to encourage local tourism.

MDHA is involved in many local projects and is actively engaged in the preservation and promotion of Medina's history. They have restored several historic buildings and monuments in Medina, including a log cabin, a one-room schoolhouse, a historic church, and a Veterans Memorial. The organization also sponsors a variety of educational activities, such as tours of historic sites, lectures and workshops on the history of Medina, and a summer festival celebrating the town's history.

MDHA seeks to foster community involvement and to engage the public in the preservation and promotion of Medina's historic sites. They offer volunteer and internship opportunities, allowing individuals to become actively involved in preserving the town's history. MDHA also encourages the participation of local businesses in their efforts by providing promotional materials and hosting special events that promote Medina's history and local tourism.

By preserving and promoting the history of Medina, MDHA seeks to ensure that the town's past remains a significant part of its future. Through their efforts, they hope to foster a sense of shared identity and community pride in the town's history and culture.

61st US Colored Infantry Regiment Historic Marker (Jackson, Tennessee) Historical marker for the 61st US Colored Infantry Regiment on the Madison County Courthouse grounds in Jackson, Tennessee (Tennessee Historical Commission Marker Number 4D 62). The plaque states: Front - "61st US Colored Infantry Regiment June 1862 - In June 1862 the Union Army established a headquarters in Jackson. The provost marshal's office located at the court house was the recruiting station for the Union Army. In May 1863, during the Civil War, over 100 African American men from Madison County joined the Union Army to help establish the United States Colored Troops authorized by the War Department's General Order 143 on May 23, 1863. Enough men enlisted to form Companies A & B of the 6lst Regiment U. S. Colored Infantry Regiment." Back - "61st US Colored Infantry Regiment June 1862 - Originally known as the 2nd U.S. Infantry Volunteers (African Descent), in December 1863, at the Battle of Moscow, Tennessee, the 61st was one of the first Tennessee USCT units to see combat in the Civil War. Its men saw service in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. During its service the regiment lost one officer; thirty-seven men were killed and mortally wounded; and two officers and 316 enlisted men succumbed to disease. The 6lst mustered out of active duty on December 26, 1865, after which some became a part of the regular US Army."

The lynching of African Americans during this era was a form of racial terrorism used to intimidate black people and enforce racial hierarchy and segregation. Lynching was most prevalent in the South. After the Civil War, violent resistance to equal rights for African Americans and an ideology of white supremacy led to fatal violence against black women, men and children accused of violating social customs, engaging in interracial relationships, or crimes. Community leaders who spoke out against this racial terror were themselves often targeted by violent mobs. Lynching became the most public and notorious form of racial terror and subordination directed at black people and was frequently tolerated or even supported by law enforcement and elected officials. Though terror lynching generally took place in communities with functioning criminal justice systems, lynching victims were denied due process, often based on mere accusations, and pulled from jails or delivered to mobs by law officers legally required to protect them. Wells, who would become a leading anti-lynching crusader, protested the lynching of Eliza Woods many times in her writing. Five years later, John Brown and three other African Americans were passengers on an Illinois Central Railroad train. News reports accused Mr. Brown of severely injuring the switchman. Mr. Brown was arrested and at midnight on July 26, 1891, was forcibly taken from the jail by a mob of 500 masked men armed with rifles and lynched in the courthouse yard.
