Founded in 1880 by British author and social reformer Thomas Hughes, the town was designed as a utopian community where young English gentlemen could start a new life in America without the distractions of city life. The community was also intended to serve as a model for rural living and social harmony.

Today, Historic Rugby is a living museum that offers visitors a glimpse into the 19th century way of life. The village features several historic buildings, including the Hughes Library and Schoolhouse, the Thomas Hughes Free Public Library, Christ Church Episcopal, and the Rugby Printing Works. Visitors can also tour the restored Victorian homes of the original settlers.

In addition to the historic buildings, the village also boasts a variety of outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, fishing, and bird watching. The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, which surrounds the village, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Historic Rugby hosts several events throughout the year, including a traditional English Christmas celebration, a Victorian Christmas Tea, and a Rugby Folk Festival.
