The Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece. Built in 1897, the Nashville Parthenon is located in Centennial Park and serves as a monument to the city’s commitment to education and the arts. The structure stands 44 feet tall, with a 120-foot colonnade surrounding the building. It includes a full-scale replica of the statue of the Greek goddess Athena, which stands 42 feet tall and weighs 46,000 pounds. The building is constructed of brick, concrete, and steel, and is painted to match the original Parthenon in Athens.
The interior of the Parthenon includes a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon’s frieze, which depicts scenes from the life of Athena. The replica also includes a 42-foot tall statue of the goddess herself, as well as a 22-foot tall statue of the Greek god Poseidon. The Parthenon houses a permanent collection of 19th and 20th century American art, including pieces by Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, and American Impressionists such as Childe Hassam. It is also home to a variety of changing temporary exhibits.
The Parthenon serves as a popular tourist attraction and a cultural center in Nashville. Every year, it hosts special events such as the Parthenon's annual "Greek Festival" and the "Parthenon Art Fair" which features local and regional artists. The Parthenon also serves as a venue for plays, concerts, and other types of performances. It is open to the public and admission is free.
