The Perry County Historical and Preservation Society is a non-profit organization located in Marion, Alabama. The Society was established in 1974 to preserve the rich history and culture of Perry County and its surrounding areas. The Society actively works to preserve and promote the area's historical artifacts, documents, and photographs, and to promote the area's natural and historical resources.
The Society offers a variety of educational and historical programs, including lectures, workshops, and field trips. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter and maintains a website, which provides information on the Society's activities and on the history of the region.
The Society's collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs is housed in the Old Marion Depot, located in downtown Marion. The Depot, built in 1910, is now a museum and contains a variety of local artifacts, including old tools, furniture, and clothing.
The Society is also involved in managing archaeological sites in the county, including the historic Church Hill Cemetery, located in the southern portion of the county. Church Hill Cemetery, the oldest African American cemetery in the county, contains the remains of over 200 African Americans who were buried between 1871 and 1965.
The Society is committed to preserving the memory and history of Perry County and its citizens, and to helping ensure that the area's natural and historical resources are preserved for future generations.
