The Gallery was established in 1963, and since then it has featured over 200 exhibitions, ranging from contemporary art to historical surveys. The gallery also hosts lectures and talks throughout the year, providing an opportunity for the public to engage with the visual arts.
The permanent collection is focused on American art from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special emphasis on the American South. The collection includes painting, prints, drawings, photographs, and sculpture from artists such as William Merritt Chase, Thomas Hart Benton, and Georgia O'Keeffe. The gallery also holds a collection of Japanese prints, as well as prints from Europe and Latin America.
The gallery is free and open to the public. It is open Tuesday through Saturday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, and on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building on the Vanderbilt University campus in Nashville.
