BLACK HILLS MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY FOUNDATION INC

HILL CITY, SD

Mount Rushmore National Memorial After visiting the Museum of Geology in Rapid City, we headed for the nearby Black Hills. There are a number of attractions in the Black Hills that Lucie and I were interested in, including the very famous sculpture of the Presidents on Mount Rushmore (photo above); a couple of interesting caves (Wind Cave and Jewel Cave); and some animals that us easterners never get to see except in zoos. I'm talking about the buffalo!

As for Mount Rushmore, I had seen it many times depicted in books and magazines, and I was really looking forward to seeing it in real life. Its main features are the carved faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The sculpture was designed by Gutzon Borglum, who oversaw its construction from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son, Lincoln Borglum. Originally, the plan was to depict each president from head to waist, but funding constraints led to the completion of only their faces. Each statue is 60 feet tall.
