The WWII Pheasant Canteen Team in Aberdeen, South Dakota was a group of determined women who opened their doors to servicemen in the area. This group was formed by the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #210 in Aberdeen. The team was made up of local women who wanted to give back to the servicemen who were heading overseas to fight for their country. The Pheasant Canteen Team was a place where servicemen could come and enjoy some home-cooked meals, snacks, and beverages. They offered a variety of food items such as hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and desserts. The ladies also provided a warm and inviting atmosphere, often playing music and providing conversation and a listening ear. The Pheasant Canteen team was open to any servicemen in the area and was especially popular with the soldiers of the nearby Aberdeen Proving Ground. The team served more than 10,000 servicemen over the course of the war and provided a much-needed place of respite for those heading off to fight for their country. The Pheasant Canteen team was an integral part of the WWII effort in Aberdeen and was a reminder of the selflessness and generosity of the women of Aberdeen.
