Penn Center is a historic site located on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. It was originally founded in 1862 as the Penn School, which was one of the first schools in the South to provide education for formerly enslaved African Americans. The school was initially established by Quaker missionary Laura Towne and abolitionist Ellen Murray in order to provide education, healthcare, and other support to newly-freed slaves during the Reconstruction era.
Over time, the Penn School expanded its mission to include vocational training, healthcare, and community development programs. The school continued to serve the African American community on St. Helena Island until its closure in 1948.
Today, the Penn Center is a National Historic Landmark and museum that preserves the history and culture of St. Helena Island and the Gullah Geechee people. The center features a museum, library, and art gallery, as well as a number of historic buildings and sites that have been restored and preserved. Visitors to the Penn Center can learn about the history of the school, explore the island's unique Gullah Geechee culture, and participate in a variety of educational programs and events. The Penn Center is an important cultural and educational institution that celebrates the legacy of the Penn School and the resilience of the African American community on St. Helena Island.
