Congaree Trees - Congaree National Park Along the 2.4 mile boardwalk loop in Congaree National Park is one of the largest remaining tracts of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in North America. Here the trees you see average over 130 feet in height, making Congaree one of the tallest deciduous forests in the world. This trail also goes alongside a beautiful array of American Beech Trees, Bald Cypress, Loblolly Pines, Water Tupelos, and Palmettos.

Bald Cypress Tress in Congaree National Park A forest of Bald Cypress trees stand in a "swamp" in Congaree National Park, South Carolina. While this area is similar to a swamp, and was even called one for a period of time, Congaree is considered "bottomland" with it's seasonal flooding and the largest tract of old growth bottomland in the United States. These Bald Cypress trees are suited to life in these floodplains, with a root system that grows "knees" that stick up out of the water, potentially for support and stabilization in flooded lands. Several Cypress Knees are seen in the foreground. This area was seen on a hike around the boardwalk of Congaree, taking a short detour onto Sims Trail.

Here, the trail goes through a forest of Bald Cypress trees, rising up to 120 feet above the swamp. These aren't the particularly large ones, but still a sight to see, especially with the "knees" coming out from the water for a root system that provides extra support.

Orangeburg County in 2021 received more than $1,000,000 in Community Facilities Grant funds to enable the county to purchase equipment, complete renovations on the Orangeburg and Bowman Public Libraries, and purchase other county needs. Critical upgrades for future expansion will be made possible through a USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan of $5,054,000 and a grant of $6,839,300 to the Town of Santee. This essential USDA Rural Development funding will be used to convert an outdated aerated lagoon system to a Sequencing Batch Reactor system with capabilities to expand the system in the future. This project will expand Santee’s water waste treatment plant (WWTP) from 0.713 million gallons per day (MGD) to 1.5 MGD, with the ability to expand to 3 MGD when needed. The expansion of the Santee WWTP is necessary to ensure that wastewater discharged into the Santee Wastewater System continues to be properly treated and that the region can serve current and future economic development. The $18 Million Investment made possible through USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities and Direct Loan and Guaranteed Loan Program will enable Claflin University to construct a Student Activity and Community Center that is anticipated to be a three-story, approximately 85,000-square-foot student-focused facility that will host classrooms, student life activities, an E-sports area, student meeting spaces, and a student-focused café that can partner with national food service brands. Indoor and outdoor soft areas for seating and gatherings will be provided both on the ground level and third floor. Shared student/community spaces will include a performing arts/theatre auditorium and a conference/ballroom with an 800-person seating capacity.
