Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major source of water pollution and the cause of the extensive stream degradation and environmental damage. Where did this mine water come from? The Ocean Coal Company, a subsidiary of Berwind-White Coal Company of Philadelphia, PA established several mines in this region including in 1900, Ocean No. 2. It is purported that drainage from Ocean No. 2 is the chief cause of the Red Waterfall. Why is it acidic and full of iron? Hundreds of millions of years ago, the massive Pittsburgh Coal Seam formed underneath parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from ancient swamp plants. Sand, silts, shells, and other matter were deposited and made a rock seal over the carbon rich vegetation. This rock contained the mineral "pyrite", made of iron and sulfur. Cola mining exposes pyrite to oxygen and ground water causing the formation of sulfuric acid and a number of red, orange, and yellow compounds. AMD occurs when this mine water seeps, or in this sea, bursts out into streams. The yellow sulfur can be seen in the shale near coal seams. The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Museum Inc. is located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. It is dedicated to preserving the history of the fire service in the area and serves as a tribute to the dedicated men and women who have served and continue to serve the community.

The museum features a variety of displays, artifacts and documents to help visitors learn about the history of the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department. The museum includes a variety of vintage firefighting equipment, such as an 1878 hand-pumped fire engine, an 1891 horse-drawn hose reel and an 1887 ladder truck. The museum also features a variety of photographs, documents and other memorabilia.

The museum is open to the public on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10am to 2pm, with guided tours available. The museum also offers a variety of educational programs, such as story time for children and special presentations for groups.

The museum is also home to the Westmoreland Firefighters Historical Society. The Society offers a variety of activities, including an annual banquet, a golf outing, and a field day that celebrates the history of the volunteer fire service. The museum also hosts a variety of special events, such as an annual “Fire Prevention Day” and “Memorial Day Open House”.

May 29, 2023: Veterans Memorial, Irwin, Pennsylvania Seen just before the start of the annual Memorial Day Parade in downtown Irwin, Pennsylvania is the Veterans Memorial, which stands at the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue adjacent to the entrance to Irwin Park. It's a tall, narrow granite slab about eight feet in height, surmounted consecutively by a globe and a bronze eagle with wings outstretched in flight, and its front face is engraved with patriotic imagery (namely a dagger and shield with stars-and-stripes insignia) and dedicatory text. The monument in its original form was dedicated on November 11, 1943 by the local J. Howard Snyder Post No. 781, V.F.W. "in honor of the men and women of Irwin and community who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America in all wars" but, in all likelihood, bearing in mind specifically the combatants in the then-ongoing Second World War. However, it has been expanded several times in subsequent years: newer elements of the ensemble include the bronze plaques flanking each side, as well as a semicircle of low square stones that ring the main slab on its rear side, individually representing each war fought by the U.S. military throughout its history (from the Revolution through the War on Terror and also including the Cold War) and each inscribed with a relevant quote from a famous political speech, work of literature, or combatants themselves. September 1, 2019: Fourth Street Arch, Irwin, Pennsylvania Spanning its namesake thoroughfare on the west side of Main Street in Irwin, Pennsylvania is the Fourth Street Arch, an expression of civic pride and the centerpiece of a long-germinating streetscape project that sought to beautify and revitalize the borough's downtown business district after decades of decline. The Irwin Project, as it was known, was launched in 2004 in the wake of a visit by a team of architecture students from Penn State University as part of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor Project, a nationwide effort at raising awareness of the history of America's first coast-to-coast "auto trail", partly through civic initiatives such as this in the towns and cities along its route. Irwin's municipal government saw participation in the project as a way to both draw in tourist traffic and combat the slow but steady flight of businesses away from downtown to locations along busy Route 30, mostly outside the borough limits. In addition to the ornate wrought-iron gateway seen here, which was unveiled to much fanfare in summer 2012, the $1.9 million, PennDOT-funded project also comprised wayfinding signage, new crosswalks and street lighting, and bus shelters, planters, and other street furniture. Although correlation is not causation, the subsequent years did indeed see a new vitality injected into downtown Irwin, with new shops and restaurants occupying once-vacant spaces and a growing calendar of popular community events.
