The Peters Creek Historical Society (PCHS) is an organization dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Venetia, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area. Founded in 1999, PCHS works to promote the area’s history and heritage through research, education, and advocacy.

The Society has a museum, located on the grounds of the Venetia Presbyterian Church, which houses a collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the area’s history. The museum also offers guided tours, educational programs, and special events.

PCHS is actively involved in the preservation of the Peters Creek Historic District, a National Register historic district located along the Peters Creek in Venetia. The Society works to protect the district’s historic properties, many of which date back to the early 19th century. The Society also maintains a website with information about the district and its history.

PCHS also offers educational programs and lectures, as well as an annual summer camp for children and adults. The Society also organizes a number of special events each year, including the popular annual Old-Fashioned Christmas celebration.

PCHS is a member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Historical Societies and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Society is supported by memberships, donations, and grants, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

GAP: Red Waterfall in 2024 Demonstrating acid mine drainage The water here is acid and iron-rich, coming up to the surface from underground mines, staining the rocks rust-red. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major source of water pollution and the cause of the extensive stream degradation and environmental damage. Where did this mine water come from? The Ocean Coal Company, a subsidiary of Berwind-White Coal Company of Philadelphia, PA established several mines in this region including in 1900, Ocean No. 2. It is purported that drainage from Ocean No. 2 is the chief cause of the Red Waterfall. Why is it acidic and full of iron? Hundreds of millions of years ago, the massive Pittsburgh Coal Seam formed underneath parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from ancient swamp plants. Sand, silts, shells, and other matter were deposited and made a rock seal over the carbon rich vegetation. This rock contained the mineral "pyrite", made of iron and sulfur. Cola mining exposes pyrite to oxygen and ground water causing the formation of sulfuric acid and a number of red, orange, and yellow compounds. AMD occurs when this mine water seeps, or in this sea, bursts out into streams. The yellow sulfur can be seen in the shale near coal seams. Allegheny County Soldiers' Memorial, Pittsburgh I had not known or planned to visit the Allegheny Co. Soldiers' Memorial, so it was an accidental discovery during my Pittsburgh trip. Unfortunately I was meeting Brandon soon and so did not go in. One day perhaps I'd go back?
The Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh, 5th Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard, Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA Built in 1926-1934, this Gothic Revival-style tower was designed by Charles Klauder to serve as an administration building and classroom building for the University of Pittsburgh. The building stands 42 stories and 535 feet (163 meters) tall, being the second-tallest university building in the world, only exceeded by the newer Moscow State University Main Building in Russia, and was the second-tallest building in Pittsburgh at the time of its completion, though it lost this status in 1970. The building is clad in limestone with a massing that tapers towards the top and center with multiple setbacks, a four-story podium at the base with bay windows and tall recessed gothic arched entrance bays, buttresses and tracery on the exterior facade, pinnacles and a parapet with multiple gothic arches at the top of the building, a theater to the southeast of the main building with similar exterior features but a much lower height, known as the Stephen Foster Memorial, and a series of themed classrooms with various decorative finishes inside the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and is a contributing structure in the Schenley Farms Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The building today remains the principal structure of the University of Pittsburgh campus, dominating the surrounding Oakland neighborhood, and standing in the middle of a large lawn with trees and smaller buildings at the edges.
