The Historical Society of Montco (HSMC) is a nonprofit organization based in Norristown, Pennsylvania dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and heritage of Montgomery County. Founded in 1934, HSMC strives to collect, preserve, and interpret the county’s rich cultural and historical materials, creating a bridge between the past and present.

HSMC offers free access to its vast collection of photographs, documents, books and other artifacts related to the history of the county. It also offers educational programming, such as lectures, seminars, and workshops, as well as special events and historical tours. The society also produces the quarterly publication Montgomery History and the Montgomery History magazine.

HSMC’s headquarters is located in the historic Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, which houses the society’s library, archives and museum. The archives include county records, local newspapers, and personal papers, while the museum displays items from the past such as weapons, uniforms, and other artifacts related to the history of Montgomery County.

HSMC is governed by a volunteer board of trustees and is supported by donations, grants, and memberships. It is a member of the American Association for State and Local History, the Pennsylvania State Historical Association, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference.



HSMC’s mission is to inspire and inform current and future generations about the history and heritage of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and to actively engage the community in the preservation, interpretation, and celebration of its past.
