Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Located in Quarryville, PA, SLCHS was founded in 1966 and has since grown to become an important part of the community.

The society operates the Herr House and Museum, which is a historic property that has been restored and preserved to reflect the lifestyle of early settlers in the area. Solar Eclipse 2017 - Beginning to End I really had doubts that this one was going to work out! The forecast was calling for a 60% chance of thunderstorms in Lancaster, PA. I had some trouble with thick clouds in the beginning but in the end - it all worked out. Each photo was made with a Canon 70D and a Canon 17-40 mm f/4L lens @ 36 mm. (1/160 sec, ISO 200, Baader Solar Filter, f/7.1)

Fireflies and the Flower Patch A circumpolar star trail was imaged above a field of wildflowers in Lancaster, PA. The firefly activity this evening was amazing! I especially like the loop made by the firefly near the center of the image. The photo was made of 130 twenty second exposures taken with a Canon T6s and a Canon 8-15 mm f/4L lens. (ISO 400, 9mm, f/4.0) The images were stacked using StarStaX.

A bright meteor along with the full &quot;flower&quot; moon are seen illuminating the Lancaster, PA countryside. The image was made of 415 twenty second exposures (about 2.5 hours). Each image was taken with a Canon T2i (f/5.0 with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens @ 14 mm / ISO 400) and stacked using StarStax. This must have been some meteor! I unfortunately must have been looking away but at least it was captured in the image.

Autumn Moonrise thru the Covered Bridge Hunsecker’s Mill Bridge is a central Pennsylvania landmark and holds the record for the longest span of any covered bridge in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The wooden bridge was first built in 1848 and rebuilt in 1973 following hurricane damage. Using Stellarium and some good ole’ fashion trigonometry, the optimal time to photograph the rising full moon through the historic bridge was determined. If you look closely, you can see the familiar “V” pattern of Hyades as well as the Pleiades cluster near the top of the star field.
