Benton County Historical Museum is located in Philomath, Oregon and is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the history of Benton County. McNary Field, Oregon State University McNary Field is on the east side of the OSU campus and in the fall is just brilliant with autumn colors. We got here in the early evening since I wanted to shoot this walkway with the lights on. Corvallis has a number of beautiful areas in the fall, and the OSU campus is high on the list. This little park is a great place to come year round for a little peace and R&amp;R.

Hayden Covered Bridge - Alsea, Oregon The future of this covered bridge may be different. After being in service for over 100 years, the Hayden Covered Bridge is slated to have a future as a pedestrian bridge. In 2017, an analysis determined that the bridge could not be strengthened to the legal load limit, so constructing a new bridge has been proposed at an estimated cost of $2,712,214. Construction is anticipated to begin on the new bridge in April 2024, and it is expected that the Hayden Covered Bridge will be saved for pedestrian use.

On the Alsea River One of several covered bridges that were built in the Alsea River Valley, the Hayden Covered Bridge is the last covered bridge that remains. Oregon's last covered bridge located on a primary state highway, the Mill Creek Covered Bridge on Oregon Highway 34, stood just two miles away. But even the Hayden Covered Bridge has seen changes over time. In the 1946 reconstruction, the bridge's portals were once rounded in its design, but have been enlarged to a more modern design to facilitate larger loads. Vertical board and batten siding flare out at the covered bridge's base, similar to covered bridges found in nearby Lincoln County. A daylighting window strip placed below the roofline on both sides of the bridge illuminates the covered bridge's interior.

Hayden Covered Bridge Hayden Bridge, a Howe truss structure, spans the Alsea River about 2 miles west of Alsea, Oregon, United States. Constructed in 1918, the 91-foot span is one of only seven remaining covered bridges in Oregon that were built before 1920. Similar spans such as the Mill Creek Bridge crossed the Alsea or one of its tributaries in the same vicinity, but only the Hayden Bridge has survived. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Located along Hayden Road just south of Oregon Route 34, the bridge was either partly or completely rebuilt in 1945. Changes included larger and less rounded bridge portals that could accommodate larger vehicles. Narrow openings under the side-wall eaves on both sides of the span illuminated the interior. The bridge, repaired again in 2003, required further work in 2006 after a logging truck crashed into it.

Of the more than 600 covered bridges once found in Oregon, only 50 remain. After 1915, although some were of queen-post or king-post design, most of the new covered bridges were of Howe-truss design. In that year, the Oregon legislature passed a law giving the Oregon State Highway Department oversight powers for bridges worth more than $500. The department developed plans for Howe-truss bridges, partly because they were relatively easy to assemble, and distributed them to the state's counties. Many of these bridges, often built with Douglas-fir timber available locally, were replaced in the 1940s and 1950s by bridges more suited to logging trucks and other big vehicles. Although most of the original bridges no longer exist, the remaining bridges have gained value as tourist attractions.
