The Douglas County Historical Society in Roseburg, Oregon was established in 1971 to preserve the history and culture of Douglas County and its surrounding areas. Located in the heart of the Umpqua Valley, the Society has a rich and varied collection of artifacts, photographs and documents that tell the story of the people and places of Douglas County. The Society is housed in the historic Douglas County Courthouse, which was built in 1916 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Society offers several programs to the public, including lectures, exhibits, educational activities and tours. The Society's annual Summer Festival features traditional music, activities, displays and demonstrations. The Society also has a research center, where visitors can look up information about the history of the area.

The Society's collection includes thousands of photographs, documents, books, maps and artifacts from the area. Among the items in the collection are Native American artifacts, pioneer photographs, vintage clothing and quilts, and historical documents. The Society also has an extensive library of documents, books and periodicals related to the history of the area.

The Douglas County Historical Society is a valuable source of information and education about the history of the area. It is a great place to learn about the people and places of Douglas County and to explore the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Construction at west end of Oakland Bridge The northwest end of the new Oakland Bridge can be seen in the foreground of this March 22, 2024, photo. After traffic was moved onto a single lane (right) of the new bridge at the end of February, contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation spent the next three weeks building a second lane approaching each end of the bridge. Starting on Monday, March 25, prime contractor Farline Bridge Inc. will begin a two-week effort to pave the approaches, weather permitting. This will eventually require a one-day closure of Green Valley Road (left) at the Old Hwy 99 intersection.
