Mt. Jefferson at sunrise with Metolius River, Oregon The Metolius River (pronounced muh TOLL ee us) is a tributary of the Deschutes River (through Lake Billy Chinook) in Central Oregon, near the city of Sisters. The unincorporated community of Camp Sherman lies astride the southern end of the river. We were staying overnight in Camp Sherman at a great cabin. The name of the river comes from the Warm Springs or Sahaptin word mitula, meaning white salmon and referring to a light colored Chinook salmon. The Metolius River flows 28.6 miles (46.0 km) from Metolius Springs through the Deschutes National Forest, emptying into Lake Billy Chinook and ultimately the Deschutes River. We had a great view of Mt. Jefferson covered in snow.

The Sisters Country Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Sisters, Oregon. The society was established in 1973 with a mission to preserve and share the history of Sisters Country. The society operates a museum that showcases the history of the town and the surrounding area.

20240419_Volunteer_Appreciation_Week_009 Jim Tuchschmidt’s imagery of a trip to the Deschutes National Forest. Jim has gone above and beyond in his role season after season as a Lead Volunteer Wilderness Ranger in the Deschutes. Jim has been an outstanding leader in ensuring Volunteer Rangers and the public have a safe, rewarding, and smooth season. In 2023, Jim also volunteered with his horse Willy to pack in tools and supplies to assist a major hazard mitigation project.

Richard has been dedicated to supporting the Deschutes and Willamette National Forests. Richard Nix and the FCWW funded and constructed a new Trailhead Host Cabin for the Deschutes this past year, which has been a wonderful asset for the Wilderness Program, volunteers, and the public.
