Southwestern Oklahoma State University - Old Science Building (Weatherford, Oklahoma) Historic Science Building on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford, Oklahoma.   The three-story Neo-Classical style building was constructed in 1910 and is the oldest extant building on campus.  After completion, it remained vacant for a year until funding was available for furniture and equipment. The old Science Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 (NRHP No.  84003004).  

The University has an interesting history.  It was established by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1901 as the Southwestern Normal School with the first classes held in 1903.  In 1920, two additional years of college were added and the name changed to Southwestern State Teachers College, with the first baccalaureate degrees awarded in 1921.  In 1939, the school’s named was changed to Southwestern State College of Diversified Occupations, in 1941 it was changed to Southwestern Institute of Technology, in 1949 it became the Southwestern State College and finally in 1974 the name was changed to Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
