The Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is a federally recognized Native American tribe located in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The tribe was originally from what is now Ohio and migrated to Oklahoma in the early 1800s. The tribe is one of three Shawnee tribes in Oklahoma, the others being the Eastern Shawnee and the Loyal Shawnee.
The tribe has a population of approximately 4,000 members with around 2,500 residing in Oklahoma. The tribe operates several businesses including the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Health System, the Thunderbird Casino, and the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Complex which houses the tribal government, cultural center, and other tribal departments.
The tribe is governed by a democratically elected Tribal Council consisting of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and three council members. The council is responsible for overseeing the tribal government and ensuring the well-being of tribal members.
The Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma has a rich cultural heritage and maintains traditional practices including the annual Shawnee Tribal Powwow which is held in July. The tribe also offers cultural programs and events throughout the year to promote the preservation and celebration of their heritage.
