In the early 1800s, Oakwood Village was a small, rural community located in eastern Ohio. Over time, as more settlers arrived in the area, the community began to grow and develop. One of the most significant events in Oakwood Village's history was the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in the late 1820s.

The Ohio and Erie Canal was a major transportation route that connected Lake Erie with the Ohio River. It was built primarily to transport goods and materials from the growing Midwest to the East Coast. The construction of the canal had a significant impact on Oakwood Village and the surrounding area. It brought new settlers to the community, as well as new opportunities for trade and commerce.

The canal also played a major role in the Civil War. During the war, the canal was used to transport troops, supplies, and equipment to and from the front lines. In fact, many of the soldiers who fought in the war were from Oakwood Village and the surrounding area.

Today, the Ohio and Erie Canal is no longer in use, but its impact on Oakwood Village can still be felt. The canal served as a catalyst for growth and development in the community, and its legacy is still visible in the historic buildings and landmarks that dot the landscape.
