The Soldiers Monumental Association of Pickaway County Ohio in Circleville, Ohio was founded in 1859. The association was created for the purpose of honoring the Civil War veterans who served in the Union army. The association was initially funded by subscription, and the monuments were built with funds contributed by the citizens of Pickaway County. The association has erected three monuments in the county to honor the soldiers who served.
The first monument was erected in Circleville in 1867, and it is the oldest Civil War monument in the state of Ohio. It is a granite obelisk that stands 20 feet tall and features a bronze relief of a Union soldier. The monument is inscribed with the names of the Union soldiers from Pickaway County who died during the Civil War.
The second monument, located in Ashville, was built in 1873 and is dedicated to the Union soldiers from Pickaway County who survived the war. The monument is a granite obelisk that stands 16 feet tall and is topped with a bronze statue of an eagle. It is inscribed with the names of the surviving veterans.
The third monument, located in Williamsport, was built in 1920 and is a granite obelisk that stands 15 feet tall. The monument is inscribed with the names of the Union soldiers from Pickaway County who served in the Union army.
The Soldiers Monumental Association of Pickaway County Ohio continues to serve as a reminder of the brave service of the Union soldiers of Pickaway County who fought in the Civil War.
