Karamu House is a historic African American theater and cultural center located in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1915 by Russell and Rowena Jelliffe, Karamu House was originally a settlement house that provided social services to the surrounding community. Over time, it evolved into a vibrant cultural institution that is dedicated to promoting racial harmony and diversity through the arts.

Today, Karamu House is home to a performing arts theater, art galleries, classrooms, and community meeting spaces. Its diverse programming includes theater productions, dance performances, music concerts, visual art exhibits, and educational workshops. The theater seats 400 guests and features a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

Karamu House has a rich history of showcasing the work of African American artists, including Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and August Wilson. It has also served as a training ground for many prominent actors, directors, and playwrights, including James Earl Jones, Ruby Dee, and Terrence McNally.

Karamu House is committed to promoting social justice, equality, and inclusion through the arts. It is a beloved institution in the Cleveland community and a national leader in the promotion of African American culture and heritage.
