Midstory Thinning Scientists vertically divide forests into 3 layers: the understory, midstory, and overstory. The understory is the layer near the ground. The midstory is the layer above the understory but below the overstory. The overstory is the top layer of the forest, where the canopies of the tallest trees are. Historically, the midstory layers in southeast Ohio’s forests were often open and only sparsely filled with small trees. An open midstory helps let more sunlight reach the understory, where young oak seedlings and saplings are growing. Sunlight reaching the understory is key for the continued existence of oak ecosystems, as young oak seedling and saplings need sunlight to develop, grow, and survive. This secures the next generation of oak trees that will ultimately replace the current generation. Over the past several decades, the midstories of many southeastern Ohio forests have become very dense and filled with shade-tolerant trees, such as red maples and American beeches. This development has shaded out young oak trees, putting the future of our oak ecosystems at risk. This is where midstory thinning comes in! Land stewards will fell certain small trees in specific areas of a forest. Stewards won’t fell all the trees in the midstory, but rather focus on the shade-tolerant species like red maples and American beech which are crowding out sun-loving trees like oaks. These downed trees will then lay on the forest floor and begin decomposing, returning important nutrients and carbon back into the soil. In the coming years, this area will also be prescribed burned, which will speed up the decomposition process of the downed trees. Midstory thinning is just one of the tools in the proverbial toolbox that land stewards can use to restore and sustain southeast Ohio’s oak ecosystems, keeping them healthy, resilient, and ready for the future! Carbon Sequestration Did you know southeast Ohio’s forests play an important role in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere? Through photosynthesis, trees absorb and store carbon dioxide, locking carbon up in their roots, trunks, branches, and leaves for varying lengths of time. This process is called carbon sequestration. By the absorbing and storing of carbon by forests, the amount of greenhouse gases held in the atmosphere is reduced. This is a good thing, as excess greenhouse gases—like carbon dioxide—contribute to climate change. The ability of forests to sequester carbon means forests will play an important role in mitigating the effects of climate change now and into the future. Most of Ohio’s forest carbon is stored in the southeast region’s oak-dominated forests. The carbon stored in the Wayne National Forest is a relatively small, but important, subset of the total forest carbon stored across the state of Ohio. Recent modeling estimates that the national forest stores over 18 million tons of carbon! All of the forests across the state are estimated to store over 600 million tons of carbon. In a forest, carbon is stored in three main places: in living plants, in dead plants, and in the soil. But there’s some nuance to know. While forests do absorb and store carbon, they also emit carbon back into the atmosphere. As dead vegetation and organic matter decays, carbon that had been stored in it is actually released again. The balance between how much carbon a forest absorbs and how much carbon it emits determines whether a forest is a carbon sink or a carbon source. Forests are a carbon sink most of the time, which means they absorb and store more carbon than they emit. But sometimes forests can actually be a carbon source, especially after events like a large wildfire or pest outbreak. The amount of carbon that a forest both absorbs and emits changes year to year. There are some things that we can do, however, that can make a forest more likely to stay a strong carbon sink. A forest that’s vulnerable to threats—such as disease, pest, and intense wildfires—means the carbon that’s stored in that forest is also vulnerable. Efforts to improve the health and resiliency of a forest is, therefore, a way to improve its ability to absorb and store carbon long-term! Forest Service photo by Kyle Brooks

As it winds its way past mountains, cities, prairies, and farms, it travels through both the Marietta Unit and the Athens Unit of the Wayne National Forest, where it is concurrent with Ohio’s own Buckeye Trail.
