The Southern Ohio Museum Corporation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art and history in Portsmouth, Ohio. Located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, the museum is housed in a historic building that was once the city's central post office. The final stretch features a wooden boardwalk that leads to a small deck complete with benches underneath the rock overhang. The main feature of this trail is the large rock overhang. These types of geologic features are commonly called “rock houses” or “rock shelters.” This rock house is made of sandstone formed during the Pennsylvanian Period sometime between 318 million and 299 million years ago. The rock house itself was created more recently when water eroded the upper and lower portions of the sandstone at different rates.
