Dante's Peak Filming Locations - Hot Springs - Buckhorn Campground Angeles National Forest, California

Twonset Hot Spring was built on a campsite at the Buckhorn Campground, off the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway. The pool and rock features were entirely artificial.

-------------

The film Dante's Peak was filmed largely in or around the town of Wallace, Idaho in 1996, with additional locations in California. This collection recreates and expands my original 2007 edition, comparing scenes from the movie with their real life counterparts, taken in 2022 (this campground was closed after a nearby wildfire in 2017). Still my favorite movie, enjoy!

The Byrd Aircraft Recovery Expedition in Monrovia, CA was a project aimed at recovering and restoring the historic Byrd Antarctic Expedition aircraft. The aircraft was a Ford Trimotor airplane that was used on the first ever flight over the South Pole in 1929, led by American explorer Richard E. Byrd.

The project was initiated by the Byrd family and was carried out in collaboration with the Western Museum of Flight in Torrance, CA. The recovery expedition was led by a team of aviation enthusiasts and experts who worked tirelessly to locate and retrieve the aircraft from a remote location in the Antarctic.

The expedition was successful in locating the aircraft and transporting it to Monrovia, where it underwent extensive restoration work. The restoration process involved disassembling the aircraft, replacing worn out parts, and repairing the damaged sections.

After five years of dedicated effort, the restored aircraft was unveiled to the public in a grand ceremony at the Western Museum of Flight. The Byrd Aircraft Recovery Expedition was a remarkable feat of engineering and a testament to the enduring legacy of Richard E. Byrd and his pioneering spirit of exploration.
