Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024 Totality! Only the sun's corona is visible. Down here on the ground it appears like nighttime, and the temperature has cooled. One of us even put on a sweater due to the chill! This and the other pics were taken in Urbana, Ohio, at Freshwater Farms. It's a fish hatchery - but they also hosted an eclipse festival! #TotalEclipse2024
Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024 Getting close to totality - This pic was taken with a 300mm telephoto lens with three stacked ND filters. The three filters reduced light by 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 respectively, for a total of 1/512 light transmittance (0.195% of actual light enters the lens). Even with these filters, the photo is over-exposed. The light entering is so strong it bounces inside the lens and produces artifacts - i.e. shadow images of the actual image. #TotalEclipse2024

Campbell Hill From the onsite historical marker: "CAMPBELL HILL The Highest Point in Ohio. Campbell Hill is named for Charles D. Campbell of Bellefontaine, who owned this land from 1896 to 1937. A marble stone marker atop the hill set in 1900 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey marks it as the highest point in Ohio at an elevation of 1549.09 feet. In 1951, the federal government established the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron here as part of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). Its military and civilian operators used sophisticated radar and computer equipment to locate and identify aircraft as friendly or suspicious, and relayed information to a central site in Battle Creek, Michigan. This Cold War site operated until 1969. It was converted to civilian use as a vocational education center in 1974." North Lewisburg Covered Bridge From the Visit Union County Ohio website: "This new bridge has a modified Pratt truss with substructures built out of the creek at a cost of $1.6 million. This is the original site of the Pottersburg Bridge. When the one lane Pottersburg Bridge could no longer handle the growing volume of traffic, it was decided to move the Pottersburg Bridge to a nearby multi-purpose trail. Once the original bridge was safely moved, it was promptly replaced with this modern covered bridge." Year of Construction: 2006. Pottersburg Bridge The Pottersburg Covered Bridge is located in Union County, Ohio near the town of North Lewisburg. From the onsite historical sign: "The Pottersburg Bridge, sometimes called the Upper Darby Bridge, was designed and constructed by Reuben Partridge in 1868. Originally located on North Lewisburg Road spanning the Big Darby Creek, the bridge was moved to this North Lewisburg Trail location in 2006 and renovated by Union County Engineer Steve A. Stolte to preserve its 1930s appearance. Its windows with awnings are not original, having been added prior to the 1930s. The steel rods were likely added in 1949. Partridge was a prolific bridge builder, having built more than 100 bridges in Union and surrounding counties. Most of his bridges were built with wood and covered, but a few were constructed with iron." Spain Creek Covered Bridge The Spain Creek Covered Bridge is located in Union County, Ohio near the town of North Lewisburg. From the onsite historical sign: "The Spain Creek Covered Bridge was designed and constructed by Reuben Partridge in the 1870s. Partridge began his bridge building career in 1866. At a length of 64 feet, the bridge is the smallest of Union County's historic covered bridges. Spain Creek flows under the bridge to its nearby confluence with Big Darby Creek. The Spain Creek Bridge is one of five remaining covered bridges designed by Partridge. Four of them are in Union County while one is in Franklin County. The windows and awnings are not original, having been added prior to the 1930s. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1988 by constructing a bridge inside the covered bridge. The large wood girders and wood floor panels carry today's traffic load. The old wood trusses currently carry only their own weight as well as the weight of the roof and siding."
